See demonstrations until 5pm in the Tin Shop, the Pottery, the Freeman House (hearth cooking), and the Blacksmith Shop. Also, see A Shoemaker at Work (9:30am to noon in the Shoe Shop), and A Printer at Work (1 to 4pm in the Printing Office).

Hands-On Crafts Center
Instruction by Village craftspeople; make an item to take home. Today’s offerings include:
10:00 to 11:00 Forge an Iron Hook ($10)
10:00 to 12:00 Make a Yarn-Sewn Mat ($5)
10:00 to 4:30 Make a Tin Candleholder ($5)
2:30 to 4:30 Dip a Candle ($5)

Some age and safety restrictions apply. Cash payment is accepted on site; credit cards also accepted.

NEW! Home Life in the 1830s

An exploratory exhibit for all ages in the Fitch House on the Common. Open the drawers, sit on the beds, imagine yourself living in an 1830s household.
The Stagecoach is Here
Just arrived in the Center Village…head to the Bullard Tavern to catch a ride on the reproduction stagecoach and get a feel for what travel was like in the 1830s ($5 per person, limited seating; under 3 free on adult lap. Operation is weather dependent.). Also, see On the Road, an exhibit about stagecoaching in early New England at the Firearms & Textiles building.

The Fenno Textile Exhibit
Learn about the home production of textiles in early New England and find out what the changes in factory production meant to fashions at home and in everyday dress. Try your hand at carding wool, weaving a pattern, and piecing a quilt block with colorful tiles.

Off the Bed:
The Function and Fashion of Quilted Clothing
See early 19th-century garments in OSV’s collection; located in the Firearms & Textiles building.

Early New England Fun & Games
Find games enjoyed by early New Englanders near the District School (jump-rope, stilts), Horsesheds (Graces), Graveyard (trundling hoops), and Law Office (Battledore & Shuttlecock). Also, check out the new Playground located across from the Hands-On Crafts Center.

EXHIBIT: Taking Root: The Growing Business of Gardening in Pots in the 1800s
March 3, 2007 - December 31, 2008
Open during museum hours, included with admission
      Now on display in the Visitor Center at the entrance to Old Sturbridge Village, this exhibit invites exploration of the art and business of gardening in flowerpots in 19th-century New England.  (More Information)
 
Sunday Brunch at the Oliver Wight Tavern Fee Program

Kiln Firing
September 7, 2008
9:30 AM-5:00 PM
      Come and see the potters fire their wares in an authentic wood-fired kiln. As the temperature rises to 1800+ degrees, the sand will melt, turning the clay into useful pottery.  (More Information)
